The astrological year is slowly coming to an end. Aries is already stamping its feet with impatience. So, this is the perfect time to recap. We want to share 10 things with you that we learned during our first 6 months in Greece.
In general, social media romanticizes emigrating quite heavily. Not to mention the constant Germany-bashing that often goes hand in hand with it. But spoiler alert: nothing could be further from our minds!
Hardly anyone talks about the fact that such a move brings highs as well as lows. So, let’s just start with that!
1. Drinking water from the tap is a huge privilege!
We would have never claimed that we weren’t fully aware of this. However, I’m afraid we weren’t fully aware of it until now.
2. We never realized how dry Germany is.
But isn’t it normal to dry laundry inside the apartment? Or to use fancy humidifiers with aromatherapy? What about hanging wet towels over the heater? Well, no. It isn’t. And that leads us straight to the next point!
3. High humidity is much meaner than low temperatures.
We had to learn that the hard way. High humidity is much meaner than dry cold. It creeps into your bones in a way a German winter doesn’t. Because of this, we have now swapped our ultrasonic nebulizers for electric dehumidifiers.
4. Well-insulated windows and built-in radiators are the absolute shit!
In general, having windows or doors that close tightly(!) and silently is a luxury. I hope you all appreciate this. At least as long as you aren’t living in a drafty, unrenovated old Berlin apartment.
5. Not sorting our trash causes us almost physical pain.
And yes, that probably makes us very German.
6. Jenny loves Laugenbrezeln and Apfelschorle
She already knew she would miss them both. But she misses them even more than she expected.
7. We were very spoiled in Germany regarding the availability of things.
It isn’t normal to be able to buy everything with just one click. Or for it to arrive only 24 hours later. Complaining about delivery services in Germany is complaining at the highest possible level.
8. Patience
Okay, this point is mostly for Jenny 😅 As an extremely impatient person, she has absolutely no desire to be dragged even further out of her comfort zone. But yes, the last 6 months have been a real patience bootcamp for both of us.
9. Learning Greek is a whole different beast.
We always thought we were good at learning languages. But then Greek entered our lives.
In the last six months, our nervous systems were often at their limit. We dealt with family challenges from afar, heavy rain, water damage and constant earthquakes. Learning Greek simply slipped out of focus again and again. The people here are still incredibly patient and kind to us. That triggers a significant amount of shame. And this is a feeling we simply have to endure for now.
10. The heart feels so much lighter here.
Jenny was in Germany two weeks ago. She said it felt like the Underworld in the Netflix series Kaos. As a very sensitive person who finds it hard to set Energetic boundaries, it felt like running full speed into a wall after six months on this small island.
Somehow, our hearts are so much lighter here. There is less collective heaviness. We don’t know if this is due to our German past or a matter of mentality. Either way, it makes us incredibly humble. We are grateful to live our lives now with much less weight and so much more light.
In summary, we can say that despite all the challenges of the last six months, we haven’t regretted this step for a single second.
Never before has the name “Humble Hub” felt more fitting than for the starting point of building our new life.
With that in mind: Thank you, 2024/2025!
Aries season is ahead to kickstart a new chapter. It is time for a fresh start and even more adventures on Kimolos. Bring it on 🔥
